Kokos, our budgie
This is Kokos, our new parakeet commonly know as a budgie. I named him Kokos which is the Norwegian word for cocoanut. It´s pronounced, “Koo-Koos” in English, well.. sort of. The lady at the pet shop in Arguineguin, Gran Canaria was Spanish and spoke very limited English said our bird was only about 2 months when we bought him. Notice I said “he”, I know he is a little boy because the area around his nostrils are blue. The female nostrils remain a pinkish colour so they are easy to distinguish. Although this is not easy to tell when the birds are so young because it takes a little time for their nostrils to change colour. Kokos was the only one in the cage with his siblings that had a predetermined colour blue above his beak.
We had been to the pet shop the day before to to see if they had any budgies. In fact, they had very young parakeets and a variety of other pet birds such as Canary birds and finches. I immediately noticed the bright blue baby budgie and could see he was a little boy. He stuck out from the rest. I used the rest of the day to study budgies on YouTube and slept on the idea of owning one. I realised that I had the time and felt as though I had enough knowledge to take care of such a small gentle creature. I have never had a bird as a pet before, but my husband had.
